Last edited 7/26/19 Latest Update Latest Updates (0) Recommended Answer Recommended Answers (7) M Martin Karlsson Martin Karlsson 7/22/19 More options Get Link Report Abuse Recommended Answer Relevant Answer I began experiencing problems with the Gnome Desktop after installing the Chrome Remote Desktop on Ubuntu 19.04.
I couldn’t open Gnome applications like Files or Terminal, keyboard shortcuts didn’t work. I also noticed that the profile directory was changed to chrome-remote-desktop, seemingly resetting the whole Chrome browser.
After uninstalling Chrome Remote Desktop, everything is back to working again. I found what the problem was by googling the “Unrecoverable failure in required component org.gnome.shell.desktop” that began showing up in the logs, which led me to this bug report:https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-settings-daemon/+bug/1764417Comment #19 mentioned Chrome Remote Desktop, and it did indeed seem to be the problem. And modifying the python file to get Display 0 (instead of 20 default) won’t work again. I just thought it was important to mention this. I got it to work kinda… I followed the instructions below. I was able to get chrome remote desktop to work (log in to other machines I have Chrome Remote Desktop on) but I haven’t been successful in allowing others to connect to this one (only ubuntu machine I’m currently using). Also installing CRD stops Terminal from launching, file manager, and maybe more. This is very frustrating for something I use almost daily.

Edit*Looks like this allowed me to access my ubuntu via Chrome Remote Desktop, but still have the no terminal, no file manager, no audio issues 🙁

Edit**So after following the article from Google above, i then ran a sudo apt-get update and Ubuntu software update app popped up a message saying that chrome remote desktop “beta” had a new update. I installed this, Rebooted. And everything is working 100% for me, including terminal, file manager, audio, and of course chrome remote desktop works both ways now! 🙂
Edit***So it apparently worked for an hour or so. I tried chrome remoting into my ubuntu laptop again and it said it was unavailable. I went and looked at the laptop and it wants me to set up the pin like I had never done it before.
So It’s still broke! Last edited 4/16/19 Helpful? 0 0 M MsP MsP 6/4/19 More options Get Link Report Abuse Recommended Answer Relevant Answer I have tried several tutorials and I can not for the life of me get this to allow a permanent connection to Ubuntu 18/19 nor LinuxMint. I can get a connection with a temporary pin but can’t get the host computer to save and connect like it can with my Windows machines. Incredibly frustrating, as I purchased a Chromebook for this very reason (to use CRD to control my Linux and Win Pcs as I travel internationally.) I deeply regret purchasing a Chromebook and should have purchased one of the cheaper dell inspirons and put a linux distro on it. I guess you can say it’s my own damn fault, but Google documents it working on Ubuntu, and I assumed that was correct as I have tried it out before on Windows. I have tried it over the past two or three YEARS, aand I have NEVER seen it work. This is with multiple machines on either end, multiple operating systems, etc. It is *BROKEN* everyplace. Google just needs to give up on this, as they are proving themselves to be just as incompetent here as they are in many many other places. About the only thing Google is good at these days is sticking their nose into other people’s business. What I am currently experiencing that I can’t seem to find a resolution for is CRD completely borking native desktop logins! If I switch to a tty (eg, Alt-F2) and stop CRD, I can log into the native desktop and then restart CRD (either on the tty or in a terminal!) after that, I cannot logout again else I have no access to a desktop as unless I go through the process again!
This is all under Ubuntu 19.10 btw!
